Drinking and Driving During the Holidays

Don’t let the most wonderful time of the year become the worst. Drunk driving is one of the highest leading causes of fatalities during Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Every drunk driving incident is 100% preventable, with Lyft and Uber being some of the most accessible ways to get home safely after drinking. So as 2022 comes to a close, it’s important to realize just how dangerous driving intoxicated can be.

Statistics of Drunk Driving During The Holiday Season

According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, in 2019, 353 fatal accidents occurred from drunk driving. We know this isn’t a total number that shows the fatalities during Christmas and New Years, but that is still 353 families that have immense pain and sorrow during the holiday season. In 2020 alone, there were over 11,000 drunk driving fatalities nationwide, with 209 deaths between Christmas and New Years.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and If You Feel Different, You Drive Different are the two most known campaigns that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration puts on year-round.

Ways To Get Home This Holiday Season

As mentioned earlier in this blog, Lyft and Uber are the two most popular ways to get home anytime you’re drinking. See if your state or city is working with either of these companies during the holiday season to offer rides home at a lower cost, like Washington, DC. You can read more about the SoberRide Program here. Another way to safely get home this holiday season is by simply planning ahead and having a designated driver. Of course, we understand having a designated driver goes both ways, so having someone you can trust not to drink is essential.
